In East Asian cultures, the word for human is 人間 (인간 / にんげん). While 人 means a person as an individual, 間 means “in between.” Humans therefore exist not as isolated individuals, but as beings that exist between others . Because we live within society, people constantly adjust their behaviour according to social expectations. In Korean culture, this is often described as nunchi (눈치)—the ability to sense others’ emotions, intentions, and the atmosphere of a situation. Through nunchi, people learn how to live inside the society.

At the same time, humans also possess individuality and free will. Our instincts resist complete conformity to social norms. In this sense, humans are incomplete in being independent, yet also incomplete in being fully dependent on society. This installation explores that tension.
